Recent Developments in the Essential Fatty Acid Nutrition of Fish

چکیده
Because of competitive interactions in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids, tissue and bodily requirements for each of the three dietary essential fatty acids in marine fish, 22:6n-3, 20:5n-3 and 20:4n-6, cannot be meaningfully considered in isolation. Rather, it is necessary to consider requirements in relative as well as absolute amounts, i.e. in terms of the ratio of 22:6n-3 : 20:5n-3 : 20:4n-6. This is illustrated by recent research in our laboratories which has suggested that the optimal dietary ratio of 22:6n-3 : 20:5n3 in sea bass larvae is circa 2:1 with the optimal dietary ratio of 20:5n-3 : 20:4n-6 being circa 1:1. The optimal dietary ratio of 22:6n-3 : 20:5n-3 in turbot and halibut larvae is similarly circa 2:1 but the optimal dietary ratio of 20:5n-3 : 20:4n-6 in these species is 10:1 or greater. In addition, studies with salmon parr point to dietary 18:3n-3 and 18:2n-6 being important in determining the optimal tissue ratio of 20:5n-3 : 20:4n-6 for successful parr smolt transition. We deduce that differences in essential fatty acid requirements for different species of fish reflect different dietary and metabolic adaptations to different habitats, and consider how such knowledge can be exploited to develop improved diets for fish, especially in their early stages of development.

Effects of Fish Oil Supplementation during the Suckling Period on Auditory Neural Conduction in n-3 Fatty Acid-Deficient Rat Pups
Abstract Introduction: Omega 3 fatty acid especially in the form of fish oil, has structural and biological role in the body's various systems especially nervous system. Numerous studies have tried to research about it. Auditory is one of the affected systems. Omega 3 deficiency can have devastating effects on the nervous system and auditory. This study aimed to evaluate neural conduction in n-...

This study was conducted to determine optimal ratios of dietary linolenic acid (18:3n-3, LnA) to linoleic acid (18:2n-6, LA) for Tor tambroides. Juveniles were fed three trial diets with different ratios of LnA/LA (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0) for 10 weeks. Another diet contained 100% palm oil, which was similar tothe diet with 0.0 LnA/LA ratio but different in total amounts of C18polyunsaturated fatty ac...
متن کاملReview: Use of Highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) in Ornamental Fish Feeds
Ornamental fish production, like all other segments of aquaculture, relies heavily on the successful spawning, hatching, and survival of larvae. Little is known about the nutrient requirements of most ornamental fish species. In many cultivars of fishes, such as Ornamental fish, especially in those new Ornamental fish species introduced to the aquaculture industry, the rate of fecundity is an i...
متن کاملStudy and determination of fatty acid composition of some commercially important freshwater fish
Fatty acid composition of fish is one of the key factors for the evaluation of fish nutritional value and it could be different based on fish species, habitat, nutrition and etc. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the fatty acid composition of five commercially important freshwater fish from the fish market. Studied fish were as follows: Barbell, Luciobarbus pectoralis (Heckel, 1843),...

Abstract The present study aims at the identification and investigation of fatty acid and amino acid profiles in male and female Liza aurata in the southern part of the Caspian Sea, in reproductive (autumn) and non-reproductive (spring) seasons. The results showed difference between the total fatty acids levels in the sexes. Analyses of fatty acids indicated a higher percentage of C16:0, C...
